My “Letter to the Editor” in the Asheville Times today. Anyone not familiar with what’s going on: Asheville is a city being considered for 1gb broadband from Google. This site, GoogleFiber.com was created, “unofficially,” by someone to create a horserace online. People voted for a month.

The voted ended. Then, suddenly, another round of voting? Why, some of us asked?

In the meantime, a Letter to the Editor pops up telling people to continue to vote. So, I did a little research and discovered this info:

‘South Park’ season premiere Tiger gets clubbed; Cliffs missed oppty?

I’ve never been a devotee or regular watcher of “South Park,” but what I have seen has usually amused me. Not only that, but I’ve found it to be profoundly on the mark when it comes to satirizing pop culture. This review from Ken Tucker’s TV Blog for Entertainment Weekly points out that they aren’t simply satirizing Tiger Woods but the entire self-righteous focus media in general makes about “bad behavior.” And, I LOVE the idea of the 360x box game: satire on TOP of satire.

I think we should also applaud advertisers, especially local ones, who are willing to see this type of programming for what it is – namely, allowing viewers the opportunity to take a step back from all the hype while also lampooning it – and I appreciate Asheville advertisers for supporting this show, particularly in light of Tiger Woods’s huge golf course project located a mere 10 miles out of town (or thereabouts).

After the “mea culpa” last month, many of those indebted to the project, and I mean that literally, were falling over themselves to congratulate Tiger for “coming clean and showing his vulnerability” while we hope to start taking deposits on homesites again, which start at $250,000 and homes are $700K to you-can’t-afford-it. In fact, it’s pretty difficult to find how many anything costs at the Cliffs of High Carolinas including the golf membership. Must follow the old adage, “….if you have to ask.” So, I don’t know, but if I were the marketing director of this property, I would have done whatever it took to have advertised on this premiere showing. And, I would have picked up some ads in markets my research has shown me are still interested in Tiger Woods and his “premiere American golf course” community in Asheville.

Because, as they say, “if you can’t beat ‘em…..” show them you have some balls.

“TV Everywhere” efforts won’t be TV for everyone — as 7.7 million viewers could be out of the loop. That is, those who won’t pay a fee to watch TV programs online — shows they are currently seeing for free.

Interestingly, this article exposes a recent poll that asked, “Is Social Media Working for Small Business….” and more than three quarters of the respondents didn’t feel it was expanding their business.

So, how does this fit with the constant barrage of emails, newsletters, seminars, teleseminars, discussion offers I get every day to hear all the wonders of social media? Much like a pyramid scheme, its great if you’re one of those lucky ones, out making thousands of dollars telling everyone how great social media is; if you’re one of those who ponied up $200 to hear them wax poetic about the greatness of social media, you may just find yourself $200 poorer.

I mean, forget any discussion on how this is just one quivver in the arsenal to beat people over the heads to purchase your product or service. You must now employ hundreds of people to twit, friend and link up to market everything from shampoo to pet food.

I’m all for blogging, social media and all things on-line; however, just like years ago when everyone who came through the door of an agency needs a brochure, simply blogging or facebooking or tweeting isn’t going to bring people into your door. And, if you have a great product or service, and you solve a need or provide a solution, you don’t have to beat them over the head either.

Of course, if you want to actually make people change a behavior – bottled water comes to mind – you may just had to hit them with a high-powered water hose in the face. But, that’s another issue.

For many of us who grew up during the “Watergate scandals” and watched in awe, the film, All the President’s Men, journalism and the truth-seeking for which it aspired, we were inspired indeed. How we have gotten to where we are now is a sad tale indeed, and though I’m not shocked -SHOCKED- by the admissions in this Salon article, it just proves once again, that the message the media chooses to promote, is the one that the majority accepts as dogma.

The outcome, however, will be – nothing. There will be no accountability. There will be no shock. Mostly shruggin of shoulders and the mantra, “well, that’s typical” or “I’m not surprised.” But, we should be. We should be outraged.
